Has video replaced photo?

Imagine that you are able to grab your phone, tablet or similar device, press a button and stream live video to the internet.  Visitors to your stream can watch and listen to you as it happens.

Do we need this sort of instant gratification?  What sort of applications could this technology be used for?  Does this replace photography or has it anything to do with photography at all?

So many questions.
The app is called Periscope, by Twitter. You download the app to your device and in a key stroke you can broadcast. If you are the type of person or in the kind of business that has an audience, this could be invaluable in the ability to feed information to your fans.

At the moment it is free and there are no ads, but I foresee either a paid version or a free with ad version coming on the scene soon. The potential is big.

True, this post has very little to do with photography as a hobby, artistic experience or profession, but I do see that this new technology could have impact on the ability for a person or business to build a brand and a loyal following.  As a photographer trying to gain exposure (sorry) an app like this would be very useful in doing just that; building a brand and feeding your fans desire for more content.

I've downloaded it and have started to explore the potential. If you are in a wi-fi hotspot you're ready to go. If you have a phone on an internet plan, you will eat up your usable media time. Upgrading might just be worth it if using it for marketing is your plan.
